Few valid claims to the as soon as desperately sought Iron Throne nonetheless exist—or they're held in arms too vulnerable or too far away to wield them successfully. The conflict, which raged uncontrolled for thus lengthy, has burned itself out.

But as within the aftermath of any climactic fight, it's not lengthy earlier than the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters begin to assemble, settling on over the bones of the useless and scuffling with for the spoils of the soon-to-be lifeless. Now within the Seven Kingdoms, because the human crows gather over a ceremonial dinner of ashes, bold new plots and unsafe new alliances are shaped, whereas astonishing faces—some prevalent, others in basic terms simply appearing—are obvious rising from an ominous twilight of prior struggles and chaos to absorb the demanding situations forward.

It is a time whilst the clever and the bold, the deceitful and the powerful will collect the abilities, the ability, and the magic to outlive the stark and poor occasions that lie earlier than them. it's a time for nobles and commoners, infantrymen and sorcerers, assassins and sages to return jointly and stake their fortunes . . . and their lives. For at a banquet for crows, many are the guests—but just a couple of are the survivors.

In the morning I carried my filthy clothes to a Laundromat in town and ate breakfast at Burger King. I wandered the streets while waiting on my laundry, taking in the sights. There was an island feel here that was different than the other parts of Florida I’d seen. Lush greenery was everywhere, and a cool Atlantic breeze swept down the streets and rattled the palm fronds, taking the humidity out of the air. The tourists were thick, but there were other travelers like me as well. Near the Burger King, I watched as two middle-aged men with hair down to their waists headed down Highway A1-A under the weight of huge backpacks, most certainly bound for Key West.

I was forced to laboriously drag the loaded kayak over the sandbars. My movements and muttered profanities woke the resting gulls, and they took to the sky in every direction, filling the night with a din of panicked squawking and dropping of more stinking excrement. I’d had about all I could take by the time I was clear of the sandbars. M. by this time. I found a narrow beach backed by woods, dragged the kayak ashore, and threw my sleeping bag on the sand. , and I looked around to see several people milling about looking for seashells.

With the bulkhead compromised, the boat was in real danger of sinking if enough water got inside. LEAVING [ 23 ] I yelled for Ernest, but he was probably two hundred yards upwind of me, blissfully paddling into the 3-to-4-foot breakers and oblivious to my predicament. I pumped as fast as I could with the hand-operated bilge pump I carried on deck. I remembered the loud emergency whistle attached to my life vest, as required by the Coast Guard, and blew sharp blasts on it as I pumped. Whether Ernest heard the whistle or just looked back to see where I was I don’t know, but when he looked I waved frantically and motioned for him to come back.
